There is alot of junk in the music buisness, It's not just Christian music though, it's really the whole music industry that's driven by recording labels and "pop" radio - the whole system just naturally tends toward promoting bad music. Originality and creativity is shunned as everyone tries to sound like everyone else (whatever happens to be the latest popular thing to sound like).
Some other problems that are more specific to the *Christian* music industry are:
The once-Christian labels are now all owned by non-Christian companies. So, even though they may be managed by well-meaning believers who are seeking God's glory and the spread of the gospel, etc. the bottom line is $ because that's all the owners care about. And the things that make money are the things that get radio airplay. It's a vicious cycle...
Also, Christian radio is mostly just as bad as mainstream radio, usually worse. They play a severely limited amount of music. Even from the "darling" artists, they only play the "hits". Sheesh! Let's hear something ELSE from the album. Let's hear something DIFFERENT!
I hate radio.
Finally, the predominant legalism in the church stifles a huge amount of creativity and places weird requirements on "Christian art" such as having to mention "Jesus" so many times per song or per album...
Now, there are definitely plenty of good bands out there. The internet and the increase in indepent labels have allowed people to get "out there" that never could have even just 5-10 years ago.
Two problems: - "The Industry" is a huge, money-driven monster - we're all just fallen humans and fame and money are strong temptations
There are many many bands that basically get eaten alive by their own lusts and "The Industry" - they end up cranking out all kinds of crap and that's mostly what the radio stations play all day.
OK. Rant over. hasta, Mike
